AGEP Visitation Program

 

Goal

The goal of Howard University and the University of Texas at El Paso (UTEP) AGEP Visitation Programs is to provide undergraduate and master's students  with firsthand experience and exposure to graduate education and to recruit students from the science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) disciplines.

Description

During the program, from September 19 - 22 , 2004 at the University Texas at El Paso and October 24-27, 2004 at Howard University students will

• attend graduate classes
• visit laboratories and research centers
• meet with graduate faculty and students
• meet with representatives from the National Science Foundation, the National Institutes of Health, and the National Institute of Standards and Technology

Eligibility

Students must have an interest in attending graduate school at Howard University or the University of Texas at El Paso and in pursuing a Ph.D. degree in a science, technology, engineering, or mathematics discipline.

Criteria

Students must
• have a 3.2 at the baccalaureate level or 3.5 cumulative GPA at the master's level
• be in their final year of undergraduate or master's study
• be a United States citizen or permanent resident
• have a major or minor in a science, technology, engineering, or mathematics field
• have an interest in attending Howard University or the University of Texas at El Paso for doctoral study

Application Procedure

Students must

  • complete a preliminary application for graduate admissions to the university
  • complete an Undergraduate Student Visitation Program application
    Note:
    Participation in this program does not guarantee admission to the HU/UTEP Graduate School.
  • This program is limited to 50 students.
  • Preference will be given to students attending an HUTEP/AGEP partner institution or any institution that houses an AGEP program.
  • Students are welcome to apply separately for both visitation programs.

Deadline for UTEP visitation program: August 19, 2004
Deadline for Howard visitation program: September 15, 2004

or Howard - October 24-27, 2004
AGEP will provide hotel accommodation, meals, and the cost of round trip transportation for all participants.

Participants may also apply to become an AGEP scholar. AGEP scholars receive up to 5 years of funding (tuition plus a yearly stipend) and benefit from an intensive mentoring and retention Program, participation in Preparing Future Faculty (PFF) Program and attendance at professional development seminars and workshops.
