Chair's Welcome Note

Thanks to dedicated faculty educators, small class sizes, extensive project-based learning, and ample opportunities for research involvement, our department enjoys an unusual degree of interaction between faculty and students. Our ABET-accredited bachelor's program provides solid preparation for work in industry or government or for advanced degrees. Our graduates are highly sought after by a wide variety of employers.

The department has many active research projects and a strong funding portfolio. Focal areas include theory and its applications, high performance computing, human-computer interaction, software engineering, and security. The department has a tradition of collaborative research across groups, across departments, and with outside organizations.

In December we will be moving into the new $70 million Chemistry and Computer Science building, whose labs and interactive spaces have been designed to reflect the way we work and the way we learn, with comfortable labs opening onto research forum spaces, informal seating areas along windowed corridors to support interactions on homework problems or research challenges, a pedestrian bridge connecting us to our sister departments in Engineering, and a superb vista.

On behalf of the faculty and staff, I would like to welcome you to our department. Please explore our website to learn more about our programs.

Sincerely,
Dr. Nigel G. Ward
Professor and Chair
