Course Theme & Goals
Introduction to the Computer Science profession with an emphasis on post graduation options, in particular job placement and professional ethics.
- Analyze your personal goals with respect to employment opportunities.
- Prepare a resume
- Be introduced to techniques for face-to-face and telephone interviews
- Be introduced to possible career paths, including:
- Co-ops and internships
- Graduate study and research
- Employment in business
- Employment in government
- Write a paper and give a presentation on an issue of professional ethics in computing.
Course Grade Guidelines
Your grade is based on homework assignments, class participation (interviewing, final paper & quizzes ), and a final presentation.
- Homework assignments will be assigned weekly and are due at the start of class.
- No late assignments are accepted.
- You will write a two-page paper on a topic of your choosing related
to ethics in computing, approved by the instructors.
- You will present a four-minute talk on your ethics topic.
Grade Calculation:

PLEASE BE AWARE: your homework is heavily weighted. It is important that you keep up with assignments and turn them in.
Attendance
Your attendance is critical to your success in this course. You are expected
to attend and actively participate in class. This includes being prepared for
class. You are expected to read the assigned pages from the text and to hand in
all homework on time.

Introduction into the Computer Science
profession with emphasis on job placement, continued studies and professional ethics.
Requires a Junior classification. Class meets 1 hour per week, a total of 11+ hours
per semester.
Knowledge and Comprehension
- Analyze your personal goals with respect to post graduate opportunities.
- Understand the key components to writing a technical report and presentation.
- Introduced to techniques for face-to-face and telephone interviews.
- Be introduced to techniques for face-to-face and telephone interviews.
- Be introduced to possible career paths, including:

- Employment in government.
- Discuss the concepts of ethics in society and software engineering.
Application and Analysis
- Prepare a resume

- Assignment: Read Ch 2; Legible hand written rough draft of essay on ethics
topic with an outline. Those with unapproved abstracts need to meet with me immediately. The final draft
will be at minimum a typed, 2 page, single-sided, double-spaced document and your hand written report should
provide enough information for the final document.
