In September 2000, the National Science Foundation awarded the Department of Computer Science, in conjunction with the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering, a five-year Computer and Information Science and Engineering Minority Institutions Infrastructure (MI-I) grant, entitled “Graduate Education for Minority Students in Computer Science and Engineering: Extending the Pipeline”. This grant is focused on increasing the number of Hispanic students who obtain graduate degrees in computer science and engineering.

bullet

This MI-I project addresses the following issues:
bullet

the relatively small number of scientific leaders within the Hispanic community,

bullet

the isolation of minority students in non-minority community settings,

bullet

the isolation of minority institutions,

bullet

the small and “leaky” pipeline of students from high school to graduate school.

bullet

Project Goals:
bullet

Fix the “leaky pipeline” of Hispanic students through their undergraduate education towards graduate work;

bullet

Build a community among majority Hispanic schools so that students early in the pipeline have access to role models;

bullet

Build a strong graduate program so that students can benefit from university and community support structures;

bullet

Build communities of interest with Texas and graduate partners to provide students later in the pipeline with opportunities for engagement in excellent research.
