| Biographical Sketch | |||
| Dr. Rolfe Josef Sassenfeld has been working in higher education for over 10 years. Upon completion of his Bachelor of Science degree in Electrical Engineering from the University of Texas, El Paso (UTEP) in 1990, he accepted a position with the UTEP Computer Center. Hired as a network engineer, he worked on designing the country's first completely fiber optic campus wide computer network. | |||
| Upon completion of his Master of Science degree in Electrical Engineering from UTEP in 1991, he began working as the Director of Instructional Technology for the UTEP College of Nursing and Health Sciences (CNHS). During his 8 years with CNHS he helped to transform a small audio/visual-learning lab with only 2 computers into a modern multimedia instructional learning center with 45 computers, a networked file server, and computer projection equipment. This transformation was accomplished with help through grants obtained by Dr. Sassenfeld from IBM and the Helene Fuld Foundation. | |||
| In addition to the equipment purchased through the grants, funds were also obtained to develop multimedia-learning modules. Dr. Sassenfeld worked with faculty members to develop several computer based instructional modules that were used throughout the city to assist in disseminating important health care information to the community. He worked with his staff to increase the use of computer-based instruction among all departments of the college through extensive faculty computer training. In conjunction with this training he modernized the college's classrooms to include digital projection systems. He designed a modern distance-learning classroom equipped with full video conferencing capabilities. | |||
| While working full-time at CNHS, in 1995 Dr. Sassenfeld began teaching evening classes for UTEP's department of Professional and Continuing Education, developing several new courses including Web Page Design, Advanced Web Page Design, Introduction to the Internet and Multimedia Program Development. | |||
| While working as the full time director at CNHS and part-time instructor at Continuing Education, Dr. Sassenfeld entered the the Computer Engineering Ph.D. program at UTEP, finishing in the spring of 1998. His dissertation, "A Hierarchical Wavelength Assignment Algorithm with Wavelength Reuse for WDM Networks," focused on a mathematical representation and computer modeling of routing signals in a purely optical digital network. | |||
| From 1998 to 2000 Dr. Sassenfeld was with Security Capital as a senior project manager in charge of a worldwide network of over 4000 client systems. | |||
| Dr. Sassenfeld was hired as a full-time lecturer in the Computer Science Department of UTEP in the summer of 2000. He teaches courses on Computer Networks, Data Structures, Advanced Operating Systems, and Web-based Computing, as well as introductory courses in Computer Science. In 2001 Dr. Sassenfeld was appointed graduate advisor for the Masters of Information Technology program, offered jointly by the departments of Computer Science and Information Sciences. Dr. Sassenfeld focuses his professional development on the study of computer-based pedagogical techniques. | |||
