Why UTEP for Grad School?
Research Reputation
CS at UTEP has a national reputation built on achievements. The CS faculty and students UTEP have: produced new tools for developing high-assurance, real-time software systems; developed better models for relating performance counter data to benchmark performance in distributed multi-level cache systems; prototyped interfaces that bridge the gap between the command line and direct manipulation; and created algorithms and systems for filtering, aligning, and serving large, noisy, distributed, heterogeneous geological data; to name just a few of the advances on which our reputation stands.
Guiding themes include a focus on important, real problems, an
enthusiasm for interdisciplinary work, and a tradition of
systems-building and rigorous evaluation.

Affordability
UTEP is one of the most affordable schools in the United States, thanks in part to solid state funding and to the local low cost of living. All TAs and RAs pay tuition at the (lower) Texas resident rate.   Tuition and Expenses Tables
About a third of the Masters students are supported by the Department as RAs or TAs. About a quarter are in the program while working full time. Most of the rest have computer-related jobs on campus or in the co-op program.
The Masters degree can be completed in 12 months, although most students complete it over two years (four semesters) while working part-time.
At present all Ph.D. students desiring support are funded by the
department as TAs or RAs or with fellowships.
Academic Environment
The CS department is a friendly place with an open-door attitude.
The typical graduate class has fewer than 15 students. The faculty
cooperatively supervise 7 research laboratories, each fully equipped.
In the laboratories faculty, staff, graduate students and
undergraduates collaborate on team or individual projects.
Reason 7: Support Systems for Foreign Students
The department welcomes students from all over the world, and the University provides a full range of services for foreign students, including intensive English proficiency classes through the English Language Institute and graduate-level English classes and workshops on Techncal and Research writing.
