Entering the Undergraduate Program

UTEP Freshmen

Students attending UTEP for the first time and desiring to major in Computer Science are initially admitted into the Pre-Engineering program. Students in the Pre-Engineering program should seek advising from the Pre-Engineering Program until they are formally accepted into their desired major, e.g., Computer Science.

The departments in the College of Engineering apply the following two rules regarding the transition from the Pre-Engineering program to their respective majors:

1. Students may apply to change their major from Pre-Engineering to their desired major within the College of Engineering once they
1.1 are currently (or have formerly been) enrolled in Calculus I (MATH 1411), and
1.2 have an overall GPA of at least 2.00.

2. Students are guaranteed acceptance into the engineering major of their choice once they
2.1 have completed Calculus I (MATH 1411) with a grade of C or better, and
2.2 have an overall GPA of at least 2.00.

Evaluation of Transfer Credits

The Admissions Office is responsible for evaluation of transfer credit according to standards set by Texas law, the Board of Regents of the University of Texas System, and UTEP faculty. If you believe that the Admissions Office did not grant appropriate credit for a CS course, you may ask the CS program to re-evaluate the course in question. In this case, you should consult with your advisor and provide documentation to show that the course was indeed equivalent to the UTEP course. At a minimum, this requires providing the course description from the other institution's catalog and the course syllabus. The advisor, consulting with a professor responsible for the UTEP course, will make a recommendation. If favorable, the advisor will prepare a memorandum to Admissions and Evaluation (routed through the Associate Dean of Students in the College of Engineering and the CS program head) that justifies the transfer and requests that the course be given the appropriate designation on the transcript. The approved memorandum will be placed in the student's folder, and the student will be notified of the decision.

Students taking courses at EPCC may consult the EPCC Course Equivalency Guide.
