Master's Thesis Format

All theses must adhere to the "Guide for the Final Preparation of Theses, Reports, and Dissertations Submitted to the Graduate School." You may obtain a copy from the Graduate School. Please note the following change:

The signature line that read:

Associate Vice President for Research and Graduate Studies

should be changed to:

Dean of the Graduate School

Make sure that you have a copy of the latest guide. Changes are being proposed in Fall 2001.

Guide for Preparing a Thesis in LaTeX

Use the style files with caution. You must check that your final document follows the guide as described above. Please read the overview provided. The following are examples of theses, which use this format. You can download the files necessary to create them to use as templates for your own. Please see instructions for uncompressing and un-archiving.

" Linear-Time Algorithm that Locates Local Maxima and Minima of a Function from Given Approximate Measurement Results" by Karen Villaverde (1993)
Karen's thesis is the original example given with the overview.

"Planning in Complex Domains" by Yulia Kahl (1996)
Yulia's thesis contains examples of tables, figures, and graphs. The tables were made using LaTeX directly.
The figures were drawn with xfig and translated into LaTeX as follows:
```
     fig2dev -L latex 
```
translates xfig to LaTeX picture environment commands, which can be processed along with other LaTeX commands. You can type:
```
     fig2dev -L latex > a_file 
```
and then insert the commands written to that file directly into your LaTeX text.
The graphs can be made using any utility, which will allow you to translate to Postscript.
