Faculty Position available for Fall 2012
UNIVERSITY OF TEXAS AT EL PASO
COLLEGE OF ENGINEERING
THE DEPARTMENT COMPUTER SCIENCE
ASSISTANT PROFESSOR
POSITION DESCRIPTION:
The Department of Computer Science at the University of Texas at El Paso (UTEP) invites applications for a tenure-track Assistant Professor position. We seek candidates in software engineering and in areas that extend computer science to interdisciplinary applications. Exceptional candidates in other areas who would add to the department's research strengths will also be considered. We strongly encourage women and minority candidates. The anticipated appointment date is the start of the fall semester, 2012.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
Applicants must have a Ph.D. in Computer Science or closely related field, the ability to establish an active research agenda, the potential to secure external funding, and a willingness to support the student-oriented culture of the department.
ABOUT THE DEPARTMENT:
UTEP's Department of Computer Science is in the midst of growth and will be moving into a new $70M state-of-the-art building in 2012. The Department is a critical component of the Texas strategic Tier 1 research initiative at UTEP and, accordingly, new faculty will be expected to further enhance the strong accomplishments of the department by building an exceptional program of research and funding, further growing the department's Ph.D. program, and supporting the overall undergraduate and graduate curricular needs.
In addition to CS degrees at the B.S., M.S., and Ph.D. levels, the Department hosts the Master of Science in Information Technology program, and offers an IACE-approved Certificate in Information Assurance, and is an integral part of the Computational Science M.S. and Ph.D. programs. The Department has 14 tenured/tenure-track faculty and approximately 200 undergraduate, 80 Masters (40 MSCS and 40 MSIT), and 25 Ph.D. students. The undergraduate program is accredited by the Computing Accreditation Commission of the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology. With grants from NSF, Department faculty have developed, implemented, and disseminated the Affinity Research Group model, which provides students with opportunities to learn, use, and integrate the knowledge and skills that are required for research with those required for cooperative work. In addition, in recognition of UTEP's success in creating educational opportunities for non-traditional students, the National Science Foundation designated it as a Model Institution for Excellence, one of only six in the country.
The CS faculty has an internationally distinguished record of research and national leadership in professional organizations. The Department's research strengths include computational modeling, computer security, high-performance computing, human-computer interaction, machine learning, computer vision, application-motivated computing theory, software engineering, and computer science education. UTEP's potential for projects in the areas of border security and defense is enhanced by its unique location on the U.S.-Mexico border and a wide range of border-related research and educational programs on campus and in the region, including the newly established DHS-funded National Center for Border Security and the White Sands Missile Range facility, which houses projects funded by the Army, Navy, Air Force, DoD, and NASA.
The Department resides in a rapidly growing College of Engineering that has doubled its research expenditures and experienced a 25% increase in enrollment over the last five years.
ABOUT UTEP & EL PASO:
UTEP ranks second in federal research spending among all UT System academic institutions, and the Department of Computer Science leads the College of Engineering in per-capita research funding. For example, UTEP is one of the six Army High Performance Computing Center partners, is home of the NSF-funded Cyber-ShARE Center, and is the lead institution for the Computing Alliance of Hispanic Serving Institutions (CAHSI).
UTEP is a Carnegie classified Research University with an enrollment of over 22,640 students. Our students, who are 75% Hispanic, mirror the population of this region and, increasingly, that of Texas and the United States. The campus, situated where the Rocky Mountains meet the Rio Grande, echoes the beauty of the surrounding high desert. UTEP’s rapidly growing research portfolio in the sciences, engineering, health issues and other areas brings in more than $60 million per year in research funding, ranking it in the top three of UT System academic institutions. The university has invested more than $124 million in new science and engineering facilities, adding state-of-art labs and research centers. Experimental and simulation based research is well funded. A virtual tour of the campus, which shows UTEP's beautiful campus and distinctive Bhutanese architectural style, is available at this address.
El Paso is a highly livable, bi-cultural community of 750,000 people that offers affordable homes and is the safest large city (CQ Press) in the United States. Shielded by mountains on three sides, El Paso is rewarded with more than 300 days of sunshine annually and a dry climate, making it possible to enjoy outdoor activities year-round. El Paso comprises 248 square miles, making it the sixth largest city in Texas, and 19th in size in the United States. El Paso’s active arts and culture community features the state’s longest running symphony orchestra, a nationally recognized chamber music festival, art galleries, history museums, and a full schedule of seasonal festivals and events. UTEP adds to the arts scene with an award-winning dinner theater, contemporary and student art galleries and a natural history museum. See El Paso Highlights for more information about life in El Paso.
APPLICATION PROCEDURE:
Review of applications will begin on November 15 and will continue until the position is filled. For consideration please include the following when applying: 1) a letter of interest (including statement of research interests and teaching philosophy); 2) detailed curriculum vitae (including list of publications); 3) names of three current references.
