Faculty Position

The Department of Computer Science at the University of Texas at El Paso (UTEP) is seeking applicants for at least one tenure-track position. We welcome candidates in all areas of computer science and engineering, especially those who would add to the department's research strengths. Preference will be given to applicants at the Assistant Professor level, although exceptional candidates at all ranks will be considered. The Department is particularly interested in candidates in the areas of large-scale systems and networking, including but not restricted to parallel and distributed processing, cloud computing, operating systems, next-generation computer architectures, high-speed networking, and network security.

UTEP ranks second in federal research spending among all UT System academic institutions, and the Department of Computer Science leads the College of Engineering in per-capita research funding. For example, UTEP is one of the six Army High Performance Computing Center partners and is home of the NSF-funded Cyber-ShARE Center, and the Department has significant involvement in both.

UTEP's Department of Computer Science is in the midst of growth and will be moving into a new $70M state-of-the-art building in 2011. The Department is a critical component of the Texas strategic Tier 1 research initiative at UTEP and, accordingly, new faculty will be expected to further enhance the strong accomplishments of the department by building an exceptional portfolio of research and funding, further grow the department's Ph.D. program, and support the overall undergraduate and graduate curricular needs.

Qualifications

Applicants must have a Ph.D. in Computer Science or closely related field, the ability to establish an active research agenda, the potential to secure external funding, and a willingness to support the student-oriented culture of the department.

About the Department

In addition to CS degrees at the B.S., M.S., and Ph.D. levels, the Department hosts the Master of Science in Information Technology program, offers an IACE-approved Certificate in Information Assurance, is launching a new professional Master of Science in Software Engineering program, and is an integral part of the Computational Science M.S. and Ph.D. programs. The Department has 13 tenured/tenure-track faculty and approximately 200 undergraduate, 80 Masters (40 MSCS and 40 MSIT), and 25 Ph.D. students. The undergraduate program is accredited by the Computing Accreditation Commission of the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology. With grants from NSF, Department faculty have developed, implemented, and disseminated the Affinity Research Group model, which provides students with opportunities to learn, use, and integrate the knowledge and skills that are required for research with those required for cooperative work. In addition, in recognition of UTEP's success in creating educational opportunities for non-traditional students, the National Science Foundation designated it as a Model Institution for Excellence, one of only six in the country.

The CS faculty has an internationally distinguished record of research and national leadership in professional organizations. The Department's research strengths include computational modeling, computer security, high-performance computing, human-computer interaction, machine learning, computer vision, application-motivated computing theory, software engineering, and computer science education. UTEP's potential for projects in the areas of border security and defense is enhanced by both its unique location on the U.S.-Mexico border and the wide range of border-related research and educational programs on campus and in the region, including the newly established DHS-funded National Center for Border Security and the White Sands Missile Range facility, which houses projects funded by the Army, Navy, Air Force, DoD, and NASA.

About El Paso & UTEP

El Paso is a great place to live. It is home to a bi-cultural community of about 700,000 people located at the very western point of Texas, tucked between New Mexico and Mexico. From the campus you can see both states and both countries. Housing is remarkably affordable, and El Paso is one of the safest big cities in the country. Surprisingly, El Paso is closer to San Diego than to Houston, both physically and culturally, and its climate is one of the best in the nation, which makes it easy to enjoy the outdoor activities that abound in the area, including hiking in the Franklin Mountains, which rise to over 7,000 feet inside the city limits. See our El Paso page for more information about life in El Paso.

UTEP is a major urban research university in the heart of a thriving international metropolis. It is experiencing an unprecedented growth with a record enrollment of more than 21,000 students in 2009 and a $180-million building boom. With new labs and classrooms to support its rapidly expanding academic and research programs, UTEP is positioned to become one of the next top-tier research universities in Texas. Moreover, UTEP is changing the face of higher education - it is ranked second in the nation in awarding undergraduate degrees to Hispanics. As the country's only high-research-activity research university with a student body that is majority Mexican-American, UTEP is committed to providing access and excellence in higher education. You can take a virtual tour of the campus, where you will see that UTEP's beautiful campus features a distinctive architectural style derived from the buildings in the Himalayan kingdom of Bhutan.
