Admissions CriteriaEach applicant is evaluated based on all the information provided in the complete application packet. Special attention is given to factors such as motivation, communication skills and work habits, and accomplishments, as revealed by the letters of recommendation (if included) and by the statement of purpose. The quantitative factors are also considered. Here the department likes to see a GPA of 3.5 or higher and GREs with V: 500+, Q: 650+ and A: 600+ or AW: 4+. However applicants with lower scores but other strengths are also encouraged to apply. In recent years, applicants with a GQ score (see estimator) over -25 have mostly been accepted, whereas those below -25 have generally not been accepted. to: The decision to accept or reject an applicant comes from the UTEP Graduate School. Please refer to the Graduate School website for information about application procedures and deadlines for domestic as well as international applicants. The site also provides a link to the Graduate School's on-line application form, but we strongly recommend that you submit a paper application. If you wish to have a paper application mailed to you, you may write to the following address to request an application: UTEP Graduate School You may also send an e-mail to gradadmissions@utep.edu with subject line that reads "Need Application Mailed". Be sure to include your complete mailing address within the body of the request. Once a completed application and all supporting materials have been received by the Graduate School, the approximate time needed for review it is 6-8 weeks. If you haven't received a response within that time frame contact the Graduate School at (915) 747-5582 or send an e-mail to our Graduate Program Coordinator to inquire about the status of your application. Most of our applicants have an undergraduate degree in Computer Science. Applicants from other majors must have taken at least Calculus, Discrete Mathematics, and Programming courses through Data Structures (the equivalent of Math 1411 and 2300, and CS 2401 and 2402). In addition, applicants should have taken Automata, Computer Architecture, and Programming Languages Courses (the equivalent of CS 3350, 3320, and 3360) or be willing to take them as "leveling courses". The specific leveling courses needed, if any, will be specified in the acceptance letter.
Leveling courses must be completed with a grade of "B" or better within the
first year after enrollment. After one year, students who fail to meet this
requirement will not be allowed to register for graduate courses. Information for International Applicants International students must furnish a statement of financial support from the family or sponsor stating that they are able to finance the student's education for the first year (fall, spring and summer) that he or she will be in this country. Although documentation is only required to guarantee funds for 12 months, students and their sponsors are strongly encouraged to plan for funding for all the years of study at UTEP. Departmental offers of assistantships should be sent to the International Programs Office so that these funds can be included in the financial support. Further questions concerning finances should be directed to he International Programs Office, 203 East Union, UTEP, El Paso TX 79968, via email to intlpgm@utep.edu, by telephone to (915) 747-5664) or by fax to (915) 747-5794. I-20 forms can be issued only after a student's admission has been completely cleared and the financial statement has been received and processed by the University. The time required for visa processing varies widely. International applicants are therefore encouraged to apply as early as possible. Many students have been unable to complete visa procedures in time to enroll for the semester that they first apply for. The CS department policy is to allow all such students to defer admission to the next full semester. If you are such a student, please send an e-mail explaining this to the Graduate Program Coordinator. The Coordinator will notify the Graduate School. |
