Abstract: Dialog systems should be able to automatically determine an appropriate speaking rate for each utterance. In a small corpus of billing support dialogs we identified factors accounting for 18% of the variation in agent speaking rate. Agent speaking rate seems to depend little on simple adaptation to the user, instead the dialog state and dialog acts in the local context seem to matter more.
