4311 fall 2006.
1. This is a very difficult and time-consuming class. This is something you probably know very well. Despite that it is very well tought and I learned everything I expected to learn and more. I enjoy the style of the class and how it is taught. The only thing I can tell you to help improve the class would be to give your students more feedback on how they are doing in the class. I honestly wasn't too sure how I was doing I felt I did good on the exams, but on everything else it was hard to determine how well I was doing. That's all I could add. *Please give sexy Omar a raise! * This statement was written out of my own will.
2. This is one of the best classes I have taken ever taken because it simply is completely different than the rest. It provides a taste of what the real world looks like. Things I liked the class structure topics the experience is provided by both the class and instructor, the project. Things I did not like: ah the exams HARD!, not having enough time to cover all the material (end of class), my grades. Thanks Dr. roach for being so mean. :(
3. Roach is tough, the rumors going into this semester were true, I wish he and Omar gave us more feedback about the documents returned in the semester. Maybe next time they will, of course hoping this is the only time I will have to take this course. I didn't like how our project was changed from one semester to the next not to say that our work and 4310 went for nothing but the project was consistency. Of course, when it was changed roach's test seemed too long to take in the average time allowed to take a test if this comment makes it on his website. I'd like to wish future students, GOOD LUCK!!!, hope you're not dealing with Web services.
4. The class is certainly a lot different than most of the classes I had taken for the past four years. Dr. Roach thought the class very fluently in his lecture and knowledge about software engineering. The most useful things were the lectures, very interesting overall. His ability to relate each term with real-life example made things more interesting. The only thing I did not like was the exams. They required more time than one indicated, especially since it has to do with designing which takes some time. Great at teaching techniques overall.
5. This class was one of the few that made me think. Most of the time I sit back and never speak. I hated it, but he made me speak, made me get want to get involved even though I am a slow student. I think one improvement would be to encourage students to speak our individual on group work. I am shy, so, I believe e-mail would work this makes you feel much more comfortable. I think this is a great idea because I myself have problems with my group. But felt like I could not talk to anyone. This was because I had to work with them and to keep peace. I stayed quiet. But Dr. Roach makes you feel like you can really pass the class even if you have no chance at all.
6. I wish we have had you for 4310. I felt like we weren't really pressured as I expected. I barely see other teams in the SE lab while I was there after ours, except this last week of classes. The team meetings were very helpful, even when we had just a few. I think we could (they) supports little more pressure with the deadlines. That doesn't mean I would have done better on your class if we were pressured to little more.
7. The class and instructor were awesome. I cannot believe that the material that was covered was so close to the real world environment. The only suggestion I have is that I think it would be really nice to ass a section to motivate students to get a job and ask the apply what they have learned. Mainly because in the real world, each company has their own process, which in some cases is not close to software engineering. In other words, there are companies developing software using bad practices. Students should finish this class motivated to apply what they have learned or be able to propose software engineering practices to managers. In this case, this class will create a future better software teams, because what you go to the real world you will get sad because you could not apply the material.
8. Exam should be shorter, a lot of times I didn't have time to finish. We should do more in class exercises, were we can practice what we have seen with supervision.
9. I think that the assignments due dates were not clear enough. There were times, were we did not know what to do on what date and the server is never worked or it was too hard to fix. Personally, I screwed the server twice (get a better server or teach us how to use it.)
10. It is better to provide a study sheet for the exams. It really helped to comprehend the material of the class. Also, the meetings each week, it provided a better understanding of the project.
I’m not sure what this means. I listed topics for review for the exams. I allowed students to bring in a single sheet of notes. Are you suggesting that these are a good thing, or that I should do something differently?
11. Class and instructor are excellent. Disappointing book though. Would be nice if we had a book that covers more of the topics we see in class and this is more interesting.
Software engineering text books, by their nature, are incomplete. Software engineering is a huge field, and to adequately cover all of the topics would take several large volumes and cost much more than the text we used. I try to find text books that at least have a rudimentary description of all of the topics and good coverage of some of the topics.
12. The lack of organization with the assignments made me lose interest in the class. We need more feedback about what we are doing to put more effort. In other hand, the fact of being independent, made me try harder to prove myself. In general it has been a good experience, but I feel like we were missing more of the real life.
13. This class requires too much time and has no consideration for the students taking other classes. At this point, I'm not really sure what to think of it. I'm too tired. You're teaching style is not very good I think. You create an environment where it is not easy to ask questions. I'll e-mail you my comments later. Gotta go prepare my presentation.
