The University of Texas at El Paso (UTEP) has been designated as a National Security Agency (NSA) – Center of Academic Excellence (CAE) in Cyber Operations for the period of 2016-2021. This designation is based on the Bachelor of Science in Computer Science (BSCS) Secure Cyber-Systems (SCS) Track. In June of 2015, UTEP was renewed as a Center of Academic Excellence in Cyber-Defense for the period of 2015-2020.
NSA Cyber Operations program review committee evaluated the CS faculty as highly-qualified and invested in conducting research related to cyber operations, and determined that the undergraduate curriculum is organized to impart students with the deep-technical knowledge and skills needed to support a cyber-secure nation.
The new designation highlights the work done by the department to integrate cyber security concepts into research, education, outreach and student extra-curricular activities. In collaboration with the U.S. Army Research Lab, the department has hosted several cyber-security hands-on workshops where students (CS majors and non-majors) learn how to tackle cyber-security problems. These type of efforts assist in getting students to realize the challenges in cyber-security and are aimed to motivate students to want to develop the solutions to security threats. As a result of this new NSA-CAE designation, the department will be able to leverage more resources to continue the work of engaging more students in the area of cyber-security.
