CS 1401 Assignment #2

Date Assigned: Monday, January 28 or Tuesday, January 29, 2008.

Due Date: Monday, February 4, or Tuesday, February 5, 2008, before the beginning of your lab section.

Objective: The main objective of this assignment is to practice using input, output, arithmetic operations, and operations with strings.

Programming assignment: To ease the parking space problem, the university is proposing to build a second parking garage on Mesa Street. The cost for this parking garage is expressed as a price per square foot of parking space, with space for ramps or other structures built into the price. Let us assume that the price per square foot for this new garage is $54.00. Each car requires a 10 foot by 20 foot parking space. Your program should compute the estimated total price of building a new parking garage based upon the number of cars entered. It should print out a message stating the proposed name for the new garage, the number of cars entered, and the total cost of building the garage based upon the number of cars entered. Specifically, your program should:

• ask the user to enter a proposed name for the new garage;
• ask the user for the desired number of cars that this garage should hold;
• compute the total cost of a garage holding this number of cars;
• print a message stating the name for the new garage, the number of cars to be parked, and the total cost of the garage based upon that number of cars.

Example: Suppose that a user of your program enters 550 cars. Then, the cost is computed as 550 (number of cars) * 200 (square feet per car) * $54.00 (cost per square foot). The cost of the garage is then $5,940,000.00.

Comments:

• do not worry about objects yet; just write your program in one class with a main method;
• make variable names meaningful, so that it will be easy to read your program;
• add comments, so it will be clear what different statements do;
• add indentation as necessary, to make your program clearer;
• make cost per square foot a constant (to make it easier to change later);
• make size of one parking space in square feet a constant (to make it easier to change later).

Homework assignment: on a separate sheet of paper, solve Ex. 2 (p. 100), Ex. 10 (p. 102), and Ex. 12 (p. 103).
