What to do when you get tenure

Before: write articles whose intended audience is exactly the set of
        people who might someday have input on a hiring decision on you.
After: write textbooks, mass market books, Omni articles, whatever

Before: attempt to get famous by solving some problem
After: attempt to get funding by hyping the difficulty of some problem

Before: make friends with "could you send me a copy of your tech report?" 
After: make friends with "I'd like a version of your paper as a chapter
       of this book I'm editing"

Before: submit papers to conferences
After: organize conferences

Before: struggle, despite inadequate tools and a poor research environment, 
        to put out a substantial research result
After: struggle to set up a good research environment with tools adequate
       for efficiently rehashing your previous research

Before: collaborate with whoever the graduate admissions committee, the search
        committee, and the laboratory assignment committee give you as colleagues
After: fight with the graduate admissions committee, the search committee, etc
       to get the people you want to work with

Before: feel vexed in research seminars when someone speaks up quicker and
        makes the point you were about to say
After: feel vexed when people in research seminars fail to make key points,
       forcing you to say them yourself
